In today's entertainment focused culture, this book is a wonderful reminder to children, that they have the power, to entertain themselves! "What Can We Do Next?" explores the mind of Lexie, a little girl stuck inside, on a rainy day. Through reading Lexie's adventures, children are encouraged to use their imaginations, and prompted with lines like, "treasures don't always have to be gold coins or jewels"...a refreshing sentiment, in times like these, when our children are bombarded with images of greed, every day. This book encourages creative thinking and could be well used, in a preschool, kindergarten or first grade classroom. Children could be prompted to draw or write about what kind of imaginary friend they might create, and what types of adventures they might dream up. All in all, a delightful read, which I highly recommend.

My boys, ages 5 and 8 loved this book. For every child and parent who loves to imagine new adventures, this book delivers. This book is a great way to experience the joys of childhood with your children. I highly recommend this book and plan to share it with my sons' classes during reading time.

If you are an adult, can you remember back to those days when you were a kid and it was raining so you could not go outside to play? What did you do to entertain and amuse yourself? Lexie is a little girl who finds herself in that very situation. She remembers that her Mommy once told her that she had an imaginary friend when she was a little girl and they did all kinds of things together. So Lexie decides to use her imagination to create a little friend of her own. Her friend fits into the palm of her hand and wears many colors. She names him Lolly because his different colors remind her of lollipop flavors. What will Lexie and Lolly do? Where will they go?
This picture book for children is a wonderful reminder of how imaginative kids can be when given the freedom to do so, and thus will serve as a great encouragement for them to conjure up their own fun at any time and in any place which they choose. Oh yes, there are television and video games, but sometimes it is actually more fun just to pretend. The author says that she was inspired to write the book when watching her daughter, named Lexie, play with her own imaginary friend. The colorful illustrations will be be very helpful in enabling children to visualize the story. What Can We Do Next? is truly a keeper!

Since that first review, the book has won several awards, including the CIPA Merit Award in the "Children's" category of the 2009 EVVY Book Competition sponsored by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association and the Mom's Choice Awards® Silver Award Recipient in the "Imagine It" category, as well as being a Best Books Award Finalist in the "Children's Picture Book Softcover Fiction" category of the National Best Books 2009 Awards sponsored by USA Book News. The author decided to republish it on her own, under a publishing company that she created, Little Sunshine Books. The new edition is exactly the same except that the copyright page was changed, there is an additional page in the back with the author's contact information and a list of the competition awards the book has received, and a "Discussion and Activity Guide" was added for parents and teachers to do with their kids after they read the book. It is still a great book!
